Marshalling yards play a pivotal role in the railway network; their ability to marshal and route trains directly determines overall transport efficiency. Today, most yards still rely on 400 MHz radio, with only a few using GSM-R or LTE. These legacy systems can no longer meet capacity demands or provide adequate immunity to interference. 5G, with its high bandwidth, ultra-low latency, and massive connectivity, is now ready to transform railway marshalling yards into smart facilities.

In response to China State Railway Group’s initiative to accelerate 5G deployment on railways, Beijing Liujie Technology Co., Ltd. has led the development of a Smart Marshalling Yard 5G Application Solution. By integrating dedicated public-network 5G, BeiDou high-precision positioning, edge computing, and visualized dispatch, the solution automates shunting-locomotive operations, enables visualized locomotive control, supports on-the-move tasks for field staff, and provides end-to-end visual oversight. The result is a dramatic increase in shunting efficiency and a significant advance in operational safety.
